Theater review - Chicago

"Chicago" is a great musical. I have seen a lot of Broadway musicals and this one ranks with the best.
I went to see it on the evening show on March 2, 1999. The theater was surprisingly not full. However, that didn't mean that the show wasn't good. On the contrary, it was great. The music and lyrics, by the same people who did "Cabaret" are fantastic. The dancing, choreographed by Bob Fosse, the best, was wonderful. The characters were all too realistic, as was the show's theme, of the American justice system as a sort of show. Peter Davison was particularly good as Amos, the invisible husband. Maria Friedman was quite wonderful as the main character, who turns how she killed her lover into a way to get into showbusiness. Her friend and partner, Velma, is also very well done. Even having the band on the stage added to the jazz atmosphere. In short, it was a great evening with a great show, great cast, great music (All That Jazz), and I would gladly see it again if I could.
